- “This is an interesting planet,” writes John Ames in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead. “It deserves all the attention you can give it” (28). Describe—and as you do, be sure to include quotations of what you regard as the most salient details—and discuss two moments/stories/episodes/passages within Ames’s letters to his son where his attention lands on something interesting. What exactly is of interest and, given Ames’s descriptions, his conclusions but also perhaps his questions, why?
- Of baptism, of blessing something or someone, John Ames writes that “The sensation is of really knowing a creature” and “really feeling its mysterious life and your own mysterious life at the same time” (23). Describe—and as you do, be sure to include quotations of what you regard as the most salient details—and discuss two moments/stories/episodes/passages within Ames’s letters to his son where he expresses, or at least seems to approach, a knowledge of life’s mysteries. What in life strikes Ames with its mysterious power and why?
Your response, be reminded, should incorporate textual evidence in the form of quotations, which should be cited according to MLA style. Please also include a Works Cited. Works Cited entries for novels follow this format: Lastname, Firstname. Novel Title, Publisher, date of publication.
