Reflecve Final Exam (For this exam you are to choose and answer one question from each of the three following sections. Your answers should be about 150 to
250 words each and use specific supporting examples. Please feel free to review any of our course materials in preparation for this exam.
Each section reflects roughly a third of the course. Each answer is worth 50 points for a total of 150 points for your three answers.
Secon 1 (Please answer one queson)
1. You are an anthropologist embarking on a new field study with a tribal group living in the Amazon Basin. You have done all your
background research and obtained all permissions necessary. Using examples, describe three things you will need to do to put together
a successful study with the tribal members once you arrive in their village.
2. Using examples, explain why we described ethnography as partial, positioned, and open-ended.
3. Define anthropology and then briefly describe the four major subfields of anthropology and give an example of the kind of research
involved in each one.
4. Using examples, describe what culture is. In your description include at least 2 of the aspects of culture (what it consists of) and 2 of the
characteristics of culture (what we know about it / how it works).
Secon 2 (Please answer one queson)
5. Briefly describe, with examples, the aims of three current approaches to understanding the relationship between human culture and the
environment (ecological anthropology).
6. All societies practice some form of reciprocity. Explain what reciprocity is, describe the three different kinds of reciprocity, and give
examples of each.
7. Describe what a rite of passage is and describe the 3 stages involved. Please use a specific example to illustrate your answer.
8. Describe with examples, 3 of the theories that explain why the incest taboo (prohibition) is nearly universal in human societies.
9. Giving examples to illustrate your answer, discuss the three properties of symbols identified by anthropologist Victor Turner that we
discussed in class.
Secon 3 (Please answer one queson)
10. Define what Globalization is and using detailed examples describe two of its impacts on the world today.
11. Giving at least one specific example, describe what anthropologists mean by World Art. Describe two ways in which local artists and
their traditions are affected by this global trade in these kinds of creative products.
12. Discuss how biological sex is different than gender. How do cultural ideas about gender (gender roles and gender stereotypes) play out
in everyday life? Please give at least two examples from lecture, readings, films or your own experience.
13. Providing examples and applying course concepts, describe what it means to say that each individual in a society has multiple
identities that are situational?
