OVERVIEW:
For this assignment, you will be writing an analysis of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by
Harriet Jacobs, a firsthand account of American slavery. You can find an electronic copy of the
book:

Your assignment on Harriet Jacobs Paper Prompt  is to read the following chapters:
• Childhood
• The Trials of Girlhood
• The Jealous Mistress
• The Lover
• A Perilous Passage In The Slave Girl’s Life
• The Church and Slavery
• Another Link to Life
• The Children Sold
FORMAT:
Part 1:
For each chapter, write a paragraph (~150 words) analyzing one example that shows how Jacobs
exposes the injustices of slavery and the ways the slave system contradicted American
virtues and values. Cite 1 reference (direct quote) from the book per chapter.
Part 2:
Write a 1-2 page analysis of how Jacobs shows the resistance of enslaved people to the slave
system. Keep in mind that there are many forms of resistance: physical, mental, emotional, etc.
Part 3:
Write a conclusion paragraph that shares what you thought of the book and of the subject overall.
You may write in first-person in the conclusion, but the rest of the paper should be written in
third-person form.
SOURCES:
You do not need to include works cited page, and DO NOT consult outside sources when
writing your paper. Use direct quotes from the book to support your claims and include the page
number from the chapter in parenthesis. Papers will automatically be run through a plagiarism
detection service when uploaded to Canvas.

assignment you choose to submit late (up to 3 days) without penalty.
